About Us

HISTORY

We aim to represent all allotment, leisure and community gardeners in the North of England.

The Northern Counties covers the areas of Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham, Cleveland and Cumbria. This includes North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Gateshead and Newcastle authorities and Hartlepool, Stockton, Darlington, Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland authorities and North Yorkshire.

The Northern Counties Allotments Association (NCAA) Management

The NCAA is managed by a Management Committee. The Committee are elected once a year and as you would expect we have a Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and up to ten other committee members.

Counties Adviser

Your Adviser can provide advice on legal issues, help you with tenancy agreements, constitutions, rules and many other aspects of allotment life. They can also advise on disputes between allotments and landlords, help with problem tenants and committees and many other day-to-day problems. Details of your Adviser can be found here.

We have advised councils on their Allotment Strategies, have assisted councils on Section 8 (Disposal of Allotment Land) actions and aided Town Councils and Parish Councils in local problems with tenants or associations. We have also assisted private landlord/allotments in drawing up leases and other documents.

We arrange coach trips to flower, vegetable shows and gardens. We also attend local events in the Northern Counties. We also give and arrange courses, see the Events page or email events for more information.

Courses

We arrange courses on all subjects of allotment and leisure gardening. Let us know if you want a specific subject for a course, if there is enough interest we will organise one. We can either hire speakers (there may be a charge) or one of our own members can give the course, the only fee would be for refreshments, room hire etc. More information can be found here.

HISTORY

There has been an organisation representing the interests of allotment and leisure gardeners in the North of England for many years, we can trace this back to at least 1976. This covered the Northern Region of the NSALG which included Scotland and most of Northern England. In April 2014 a new association was formed with a new constitution. This Constitution enabled the organisation, then known as the Northern Region Allotments Association, to better represent all its members and any other allotment or leisure gardeners in the region who wished to join.

In March 2018, after a number of meetings, the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG) decided, without consultation with the NRAA, to form a new group in the Northern Region. Because we are no longer an affiliate of the NSALG we have changed our name to ‘Northern Counties Allotments Association’.
